Neenah Paper Goes Mobile
First Blackberry Application is the Eco-Calculator
ALPHARETTA, Ga. (March 19, 2009) — Neenah Paper is pleased to introduce another exciting first in the paper industry: a series of useful applications for BlackBerry® smartphones. The first application provides mobile access to Neenah’s popular eco-calculator and is available now. It allows the user to instantly calculate the environmental savings from using paper made with post consumer fiber as well as the savings from using paper made with 100% renewable energy. Neenah Paper offers a wide selection of recycled and sustainable premium papers including the CLASSIC® and ENVIRONMENT® Brands.
“Merchant and printing sales representatives in the field are calling on design studios and printing offices around the world, selling our Neenah Green premium papers. They need information at their fingertips, and sometimes have limited access to an internet connection. Because information is power, a wireless application like our eco-calculator brings real value in real time. Decisions can be made faster, and that is critical to our customers,” says Meredith Grant, Environmental Marketing Representative at Neenah Paper.
By simply entering the amount of paper needed for a project, the Neenah Paper eco-calculator provides the amazing environmental savings realized by choosing recycled papers consisting of different levels of post consumer fiber content. Displayed immediately on the screen, the savings are measured in wood, water, energy, carbon emissions, and solid waste. This instant access is an important tool when energy conservation and sustainability are contributing factors in the customer’s decision-making process for today’s paper specification.
To download the free BlackBerry application visit www.neenahpaper.com/mobile and be sure to check back for additional BlackBerry applications in the series that Neenah Paper will be introducing.

Smart Papers sells brands to Mohawk
Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. has acquired Smart Papers LLC’s uncoated paper brands, a move that will cut more than half of Smart Papers’ employees at its Hamilton mill.
Cohoes, N.Y.-based Mohawk, which also operates a mill in Hamilton, said it has purchased the company’s premium uncoated writing, text and cover paper brands. It also will be the exclusive marketer of Smart Papers’ Kromekote and Knightkote brands to paper distribution firms and and graphic designers globally, according to a news release. The transition will take place over the next 30 days.
Smart Papers said in a separate release that it will continue to manufacture ultra-premium, cast-coated and recycled matte printing papers, and continue direct selling of its coated paper brands to certain accounts, like original equipment manufacturers, laminators and packaging printers.
The Hamilton Journal-News , quoting the president of the United Steelworkers of America Local 1967, said about 200 Smart Papers workers will be laid off as a result of the sale. That’s about 55 percent of the mill’s union members and 60 percent of its salaried employees, according to the story. About 160 employees will remain, the union head said.
Mohawk, which bought the former Beckett paper mill in Hamilton in 2005, closed the mill for two weeks in December and January due to soft demand.
Smart Papers, which is majority owned by Plainfield Special Situations Master Fund Limited, a hedge fund group based in Connecticut, laid off about 50 workers in the fourth quarter of 2008. Its mill, once owned by Champion Paper Co., was purchased from International Paper in 2001.

Knightkote Matte Premium Coated Now FSC Certified
SMART PAPERS WINS FULL FSC CERTIFICATION FOR KNIGHTKOTE® MATTE PREMIUM COATED PRINTING PAPERS
HAMILTON, Ohio, January 22, 2009—SMART Papers’ Knightkote® Matte, long respected for its high recycled fiber content, is now fully Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. Corporations and graphic design professionals have immediate access to the company’s extensive lineup of environmentally responsible coated matte printing and packaging papers.
Knightkote Matte is manufactured with 50% recycled fibers, including 30% post-consumer fibers. That is the highest recycled and post-consumer fiber content in a premium coated paper produced and sold by any North American papermaker. New FSC certification gives Knightkote further industry-leading positioning and makes it a top choice for corporations, higher education and other non-profits who need environmentally responsible printing papers.
SMART Papers, North America’s largest independent manufacturer of premium cast coated, matte coated and uncoated printing and packaging papers offers the most extensive selection of FSC-certified brands including Kromekote®, Genesis®, Synergy®, Pegasus®, Solutions®, Skytone®, Proterra®, Feltweave®, Nekoosa® Linen and now Knightkote® Matte. Several brands are available with 100 percent post-consumer fibers.
The growing collection of FSC-certified papers underscores SMART Papers’ longstanding commitment to sustainability in its premium branded papers and manufacturing operations. Recently the company broke ground on a $30 million energy production facility to be powered by 100% cellulosic biomass fuel, primarily waste wood waste. By late 2009, all of the company’s products will be fully carbon neutral and produced fossil fuel-free.
“We will continue striving to exceed customer expectations when it comes to environmental stewardship,” said Doug Gruber, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for SMART Papers. “With the addition of Knightkote, SMART Papers continues to grow its offering of premium papers that are manufactured with high levels of post-consumer fiber and are FSC certified.”
“Sustainability is a choice,” added SMART Papers Chairman Tim Needham. “We’re offering our customers the choice of having it all—the broadest range of high quality, value priced, environmentally responsible FSC-certified printing papers.”
He cited the company’s investment toward 100% fossil-fuel free production now underway at its Hamilton, Ohio manufacturing center. No other North American printing paper manufacturer is currently transitioning all of its operations to fossil-fuel free production.
